What Project POWER/AmeriCorps Means…

A fourth grader in my after school has moved a D in math to a B, all because he receives the support he needs to review and rework his math homework with me every afternoon in a quiet, positive atmosphere.

AmeriCorps is amazing because along with my service to the community I am building professional skills and confidence.

It means that because of my service, a third grader in my after school program has moved up four reading levels in one year!

Service Learning has been institutionalized at UNC Asheville’s campus this year because of my service through Project POWER/AmeriCorps.

Each day I work with my elementary students, they are making connections between the indoor classroom and the outdoor, hands-on garden; their education is expanding and experiential because of my AmeriCorps service with Project POWER.

This year has broadened my understanding of the world, it has helped me grow as a person and has allowed me to be a force of positive change in my community!

My AmeriCorps service has provided the necessary classroom support allow differentiated learning to occur in the first grade classroom I work in; teaching is targeted to them individually, not just the ambiguous idea of where the class average might be.

Because of Project POWER/AmeriCorps’ partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters we have be able to reach more children and more schools with positive adult mentors, inspiring hope and improving lives!
